Computers and electronic devices are available to children at a younger age than ever before. There is limited research as to the effects of poor posture and use of electronic devices on children. This is mainly due to technology growing rapidly. The development years are critical and the importance of correcting posture and balancing sedentary activities in children is often ignored. Early intervention is key! Parents need to consult with their child’s Occupational Therapist to provide assessments, education, and task specific equipment to reduce the risk of discomfort and injury. Some basic principles that can be implemented include:
  • Ensure the child’s feet are on a stable surface
  • The child’s bottom should be at the back of the chair and there should be two to four fingers between the back of the knee and the front of the chair
  • Keep neck, shoulders, arms, and hands in a neutral posture
